Program Description

Undeclared Nursing and Health Sciences (UHS) is an academic pathway, not a major. Based on a holistic review of prospective student's application, a student may be admitted to La Salle University School of Nursing and Health Sciences as a Undeclared Nursing and Health Science student.  UHS students have not met the criteria for admission to the Nursing major at the time of application, but may seek admission to the Nursing major by meeting specific requirements during their first year and by completing the pre-requisite courses as outlined in the the four (4) years plus Summer curriculum. UHS students who successfully meet all of the criteria outlined below prior to the fall semester of their sophomore year will be evaluated for admissions to the Nursing major. An Academic Advisor will support and advise students who may want to explore alternative major options.

Expectations

The Student Must:

• Attend mandatory advising meetings with their Academic Advisor every semester.
• Attend meetings with their designated Student Success Coach every semester.
• Attend One-on-One tutoring and/or Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions and other support services on campus.
• Meet academic progression requirements each semester of the Freshmen year to be eligible to start the NUR major in the fall of the Sophomore year.

Progression Requirements

• Earn a grade of a "B" or higher in BIO 161, Anatomy and Physiology at the end of the fall semester to progress to the spring semester science courses. The student may not repeat this science or any other future science courses if seeking admission into the Nursing major. 
• Complete two science courses - BIO 162, Anatomy and Physiology II and either CHM 161, Chemistry for the Life Sciences or BIO 163, Clinical Microbiology during the spring semester. The student must meet with their Academic Advisor regarding the required science GPA of 3.0 in order to receive approval to register for the remaining science course during the summer at either La Salle University or another approved College or University.
• In order to progress to the NUR major which will start in the fall of sophomore year. The student must meet all of the following requirements: 
  • A Science GPA of 3.0, with completion of Chemistry (4 credits); Microbiology (4 credits); Anatomy and Physiology I - 4 credits - (must have attained a grade of a "B" or better in this class) and Anatomy and Physiology II - 4 credits.  No individual science grade may be lower than a "C".  A student may not repeat any science course if seeking admission to the Nursing major.
  • A 3.0 overall GPA at La Salle University.
  • A grade of a C or better in PSY 210, Developmental Psychology.
  • Complete at least 34 credits in the required core and pre-requisite courses as advised.
  • Meet all compliance requirements, including (but not limited to) state and federal background checks, child abuse clearances, drug testing, immunizations, health records and at the present time, COVID vaccination is a requirement of the NUR program.

Student Learning Outcome

At the end of the Freshman Year, the UHS student, who has met the pre-requisite requirements identified earlier of a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.0 science GPA, and completion of 34 liberal arts/science credits, will be coded as Nursing (NUR) major.  Following completion of the NUR program, the student is prepared to:

• Integrate liberal education and nursing knowledge as a basis for clinical judgement.
• Exhibit leadership attributes, rooted in systems-based practice, to promote safe, equitable, quality care and work environments for providers and clients.
• Integrate nursing science and best evidence into the ethical care of diverse clients.
• Incorporate informatics and health care technologies to promote safe, equitable, cost-effective, quality care.
• Practice as an advocate to promote population health across the health care delivery continuum.
• Communicate effectively as a member of the interprofessional healthcare team to deliver optimal person-centered care.
• Engage in collaborative partnerships, advocacy, and policy development with diverse populations across the lifespan to promote equitable health access, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Demonstrate accountability for caring, professional nursing practice that addresses holistic and complex needs of clients across the lifespan and spheres of care.
• Integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into one's professional identity.
• Demonstrate self-reflective practice to facilitate self-care, professional, and leadership development.
